People Don’t Like to Be Sold by Idiots

Jeffrey Gitomer is a brilliant guy. His Little Red Book of Selling is a great read.  But I’d like to offer an alternate take on one of his most popular sayings…

Gitomer is famous for popularizing the phrase “People don’t like to be sold, but they love to buy.” It sounds right when we hear it.  In fact, if we don’t examine it too carefully, we’re tempted to just nod along and say, “yeah, that’s right. People don’t like to be sold, but they do love to buy. Right on, Gitomer!”

Only trouble?  It’s not true.

It’s not true that people don’t like to be sold.
They just don’t like to be sold poorly…

Naturally, when we’re approached by a sales hack — a true butcher of the art — no one likes to be sold.  But when we’re approached by a sales artiste — a true master of the art — then being sold is an absolute delight!

So here’s my take on this timeless classic:

“People don’t like to be sold by idiots,
but they love to buy from professionals.”

    Agree. I’ve had terrible sales experiences that I didn’t enjoy at all and I’ve had excellent sales experiences which I really liked. In each case, the approach of the sales person made all the difference.
